In addition to winning this prestigious title, Escalante will also receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation and a $500 scholarship from SDSU.

She is among hundreds of Youth of the Year winners across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.

“It was great being the local Youth of the Year, but being the state winner…WOW! It’s amazing and a true honor! Now I just have to stay focused on competing at regionals,” said Escalante.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. This program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of the Reader’s Digest Foundation.

Escalante showed her true character when her mother passed away shortly after her 14th birthday. Being the oldest of five children, she rose to the challenges, kept a positive attitude and supported her family in all the ways her mother had done.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills (BGCBH) was thrilled for Escalante to take on a larger role at the Club and become a volunteer. She participated daily to assisting the staff with programs and began to establish relationships with other members. It wasn’t long after, Escalante had showed her dedication and hard work that she became part of the Junior Staff.

Today, she is a vital part of the activity happening inside the Club to make it function on a daily basis. Her willingness to jump into any area her talents are needed is just one of the many reasons she is valued.

“The Boys & Girls Club is an incredible place and I definitely encourage more teens to come and be a part of the Club. They would learn a lot and have more opportunities to be a part of several activities, including Youth of the Year,” said Escalante.

In addition to her dedication to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills, Escalante is actively involved in Hill City High School’s National Honor Society, Leo Club and student council. With these groups she has done many service projects for the community. Her most passionate is the annual holiday food drive where the group collects food for those in need to have a special holiday dinner with their families.

Arisbet knew at a young age that her education would be an important part of her life and it would be her determination and discipline needed to meet those expectations she set for herself. Arisbet had the desire to make her parents proud and be a role model for her younger sisters.

Toward the end of her sophomore year, Arisbet was one of only four sophomores elected to membership in the Hill City High School chapter of the National Honor Society, which recognizes and encourages high moral character, outstanding academic performance, and significant community leadership and involvement.

Not only is Arisbet disciplined with herself but also with her younger sisters. She continuously reminds them of the importance of an education and to always do their best. She has become a role model for the younger children she mentors at the Boys & Girls Club.

Increasing numbers of American teens are reared in homes in which one or both parents attended or even graduated from college, perhaps even moving on into graduate or professional studies. Escalante will be the first of her family to graduate from high school.

Further, it is her goal to attend and complete undergraduate college studies, move on to graduate school, and become a Forensic Scientist. Escalante had a career choice long before television created the hype for crime scene investigation and forensics among the young American population. As she puts it, “I like science. I like to look beyond the obvious, to understand the parts of the body and how they work together. And I want to be able to solve crimes!” That dream will now become a reality with the scholarships offered through the Youth of the Year program.

“Arisbet and all Youth of the Year nominees are living proof that Boys & Girls Clubs across the country are fulfilling their mission of inspiring and enabling young people,” said Roxanne Spillett, president, BGCA. “We are most appreciative to the Reader’s Digest Foundation for their long-time support of our Youth of the Year program and for helping Club members attain their goals.”

This summer, Escalante will compete against other youth from states located in BGCA’s Midwest Region. If named regional winner, she will be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship and advance to the national competition in Washington. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and will be installed by President Barack Obama during a ceremony in the Oval Office.
